The Things People Say

Many thanks for sending us a copy of your new project - an absolutely exquisite and stunning collection of memorable tunes. You've always had a unique musical vision which I have enjoyed immensely - you're playing is crisp, clean, imaginative and has this wonderful contemporary sound. I especially enjoyed "Fat Brown Trout," "Same Old Places," Railroad Blues," "Woozel's Reel," and "IOU Sam." Your new tune for "Down In the Valley" is just killer - I can't believe how fresh and cool you've made those old lyrics sound. And, of course, "Love Train" is in a class by itself. I love it!! The backup boys (and girls) do a stellar job - Ben Winship has for a long time been one of my personal musical heroes - and the Schimpp girls sing some beautiful harmony. "Souls and Spirits" has got that "sound" and is one of most exciting new recordings I've heard in a long time. The picture on the front cover is just about worth the price of admission by itself. Outstanding!!!

Watching Chris' development as a musician has been one of my personal joys in my quarter century of work in the acoustic music biz. He is unquestionable one of the finest musicians you can hear in the Upper-Midwest today. Whether behind his guitar, mandolin, or fiddle Chris' playing will make an audience settle down and take notice in any musical aggregation you may find him. He's rock solid as either a lead or harmony vocalist. I'm glad I don't consider myself a musician; I'd have to be jealous. All I have to do is enjoy him. Buy his CDs and go see him every chance you get.

I think Chris is the best flatpicker in the Upper-Midwest. I don't think there is anyone who plays faster and smoother than he does.

"Chris and his bandmates play string band music without pretension, blending influences of Blind Lemon Jefferson, Little Feat, and old time string bands with strains of bluegrass. Throw in a little funk to spice things up and add a bit of a jam band sensibility to the music and you've got a band that comes across as a completely original acoustic ensemble."
